#TastyTuesday: DIY Oatmeal Packets

Last weekend, I traveled to Maryland for my brother’s commencement ceremony. Tomorrow, I’m heading to Miami for a friend’s bachelorette party. And bright and early on Saturday, I’m flying from Miami to Charlotte for another friend’s wedding. So it’s safe to say that I’ve been doing a lot of traveling lately. And while trying out (or returning to) local restaurants is one of my favorite parts of visiting different cities, I also start to feel sluggish if I eat too much indulgent food—so I pretty much always start out my day with a healthy breakfast. Oatmeal is my favorite choice, and I’ve been known to doctor up packets of instant oatmeal with banana slices, peanut butter, and/or a dollop of yogurt (pretty much all of the above are available at your standard continental breakfast). But this long weekend, I’m going to come prepared with my own pre-made oatmeal packets!

This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and I’m so excited to have finally tested out a few combos to share with you. Each of the packets start with 1/3 cup of oatmeal and 1 tablespoon of milk powder (you can find it in the baking aisle at most stores, near the condensed milk). This gives you a creamy base—and then I add in dried fruit, nuts, and other flavorings. I came up with a few different combos: chocolate-cherry oatmeal, apple-cinnamon oatmeal, peanut butter and jelly oatmeal, and piña colada oatmeal. For each of these, I recommend adding somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 cup of hot water (depending on how thick you like your oatmeal), covering your bowl with a plate for two minutes (it helps the oats cook), and then removing the plate to enjoy your healthy breakfast. One other tip: While zip-top bags are great, they also open fairly easily. So I’d recommend double-bagging these and/or keeping all of your oatmeal packets in a bigger, sealed bag (assuming you don’t want your breakfast to end up all over your travel wardrobe).
